Cemetery Project of South Africa

Cem_Muizenberg_McConnel_,Mear_R_001Ancestry24 has a embarked on a nationwide project to help preserve our heritage and family history, by aiming to have every grave in South Africa photographed. Everyone has a relative that is buried in a grave somewhere in South Africa.

Have you recently walked past a graveyard and seen how run down and neglected they have become? Have you noticed how the epitaphs are faded and hardly legible? Seen  headstones that have had the lead removed or the writing has weathered away?

To photograph every single grave in South Africa, and make these images available for free on the Ancestry24 Gallery, is our ambitious solution.

We have an arrangement with the Cape Town Municipality who has given us permission to photograph the cemeteries in the Cape Town Metropolitan area. Should you wish to help photograph or transcribe these headstones please contact us. If you also have photo’s that you would like to send us because there are too many to upload, please contact us for our postal address.

Please get involved and help photograph these headstones. Once the photographs have been taken and named by the volunteers they are also encouraged to transcribe them so they can be added to our National Database.  Contact us if you want to start and we will tell you if that cemetery has been covered or not.
